Coccola, Hillsborough, NJ

I went back to Coccola in Hillsborough last Tuesday for dinner with friends. I’ve was there for brunch a few weeks ago and really liked it and it was convenient for everyone, so back I went. You can read about the brunch on an earlier post.
Being Tuesday night the place was pretty empty. We were served by a charming & pretty young waitress who informed us that select wines were priced lower on Monday’s and Tuesdays. I wish more restaurants would do this. We ordered the 2005 Twenty Bench, Cabernet Sauvignon for just $25! I’ve had this wine before and like it quite a bit. It’s a good, reasonably priced cab. I think it retails for around $15.
We were told that the menu has changed recently and they’ve added more pasta dishes. It’s an italian menu, but not your typical italian – kind of like a contemporary american-italian influenced menu.
Lyle and I decided to just order a bunch of appetizers while Kedar went for a main course. Lyle’s a vegan, but that’s another story. Lately I like doing just appetizers. You get so much more variety, so boring to just eat 1 thing.
Onto the main event:
- Tuna Tuna Tuna – a trio of tuna items that includes tuna sushi, tuna sashimi and tuna tartare. The sashimi and tartare were excellent, while the rice for the sushi was under-cooked.
- Asian Vegetable spring roll – really good with a nice kick. Huge portion for an appetizer.
- Roasted beet salad with goat cheese – okay, nothing special. Would have been better with baby beets.
- Mixed green salad & tri-color salad – for Lyle, seemed kind of boring.
- Monk fish which was a special entre that night. Kedar said it was very good.
We did indulge in dessert, having the chocolate mousse tart (a special) and the warm chocolate cake which had a gooey center and was really good.
Overall this is a really nice place with good decore, good food, friendly staff and reasonable prices. I will definately be back.
